Using Agile development and observational research to build a contributory business analytics platform

Challenge

Auditors, analysts and investigators were locked into data silos and geographic boundaries while trying to detect and prevent business noncompliance. Tax evasion alone from this problem cost customers at least $300b per year.

Action

I led a small "skunkworks" team that watched and interviewed users in the field to refine observations into user stories. Leveraging rapid Agile development, we created a proof-of-concept PaaS that enabled customers to combine their small silo of data with a shared, massive data set to find unknown connections and businesses.

Result

Through a secure, confidential web portal, users were able to query and analyze the combined business data. This provided enormous lift in data integrity and revealed hidden connections.

A large audit team focused on tracking down tax evasion amongst partnerships (e.g. LLCs or LLPs) reported it reduced their audit preparation time by at least 50%.
